CANDIDATES FOR THE US HOUSE IN HOUGHTON LAST WEEK
Two of the 2026 Democratic primary candidates for the US House District 1 seat stopped by Houghton this past week for Meet & Greets with local Dems and friends.
Callie Barr stopped by on Sunday the 2nd. She used the acronym LIFE to discuss her priorities. L for local housing (an urgent need throughout the district); I for income (living wages for workers); F for food (its unacceptable that in the wealthiest country on earth the federal government is not guaranteeing food access to the poor and the elderly); and E for essential healthcare (the problems with healthcare are by policy and by design and we need better policy).
You can learn more about and support the candidacy of Callie Barr by visiting her website here.
Kyle Blomquist stopped by this past Saturday. He emphasized working people, and focusing not on left versus right, but on all of us versus the top 1%. He does not propose to be a politician who intends to do the least harm, but one who strives to do the most good. Our basic needs are human rights - this is not radical, it’s necessary.

FOOD AID DONATION
DONATION DECIDED AT LAST WEEK’S MEETING
At our monthly meeting last Wednesday there was a lengthy discussion about what we, as a local Democratic County party, could do to help fill the need brought about by the insanity of the Trump administration’s decision to withhold SNAP benefits as a bargaining chip in the government shutdown.
There was much discussion weighing the appropriateness of using the funds we have raised as a party for this need. In the end, a vote was taken among the members present, and the proposal to donate $750 for food aid to St. Vincent de Paul was unanimously passed.
It is a testament to the good in our community - to you our members and supporters - that this was a unanimous vote. We are cognizant of the fact that, as a political party, those who donate funds to us have another need in mind - supporting candidates. That’s why it is so heartening to know that soon after word of this unanimous decision went out generous donors quietly contributed monies specifically to help back this donation and allow us as a party to stay funded for our primary mission. Thank you to everyone for your generosity, and for helping us to help others.

ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO HELP AT THE DEC. 3 MEETING
The need for us to all do more was part of that discussion at our meeting last week. We’ve been inspired by other county parties who “adopt” charities in their communities on a regular basis, and we’d like to try to do something similar here in Houghton County.
So, for next month’s Potluck and Monthly Meeting, we are inviting all who attend to please bring a contribution for the Copper Country Angel Mission in Calumet. This can be in the form of food donations or a check payable to CC Angel Mission. The CC Angel Mission has a Free Store and a Food Pantry. It also provides assistance with rent, utility shut-offs, transportation to medical appointments, and other needs. It can benefit from both food donations and monetary ones to help it keep the lights on.
Find out more about the Copper Country Angel Mission on their website.
HOLIDAY CHEER AT THE DECEMBER MEETING

Join us for our Holiday Potluck Party and December monthly meeting at 6 PM Wednesday December 3rd, at the Super 8 in Houghton.
It’s a Potluck Holiday Party - starting at 6 PM. Bring a festive dish to share if you can, or just bring your festive spirit and enjoy some quality time with your fellow Dems before we settle down to business at 7.
You are invited to please bring a contribution - monetary or food - for the Copper Country Angel Mission in Calumet.
Remote attendance is available by Zoom. Click here at 7 PM Wednesday to attend by Zoom.
Membership in the Houghton County Democratic Party is encouraged, but not required, to attend meetings. We welcome all Houghton County residents who support progressive Democratic government to attend our meetings and events and also to become involved.
