The Rev. Jesse Jackson, shown here in an uncredited photo from his 1988 campaign for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, died last week at the age of 84. Rev. Jackson was a longtime civil rights leader who got his start working for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was an advocate for the poor and for LGBTQ rights. He ran for President in 1984 and again in 1988, when he finished 2nd in convention delegates behind Michael Dukakis. In their joint statement below, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama honored the man who “laid the foundation” for Mr. Obama’s historic election as the nation’s first Black president.

PARTY NEWS
SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ICE DETENTION IN MARENISCO
Word spread quickly early last week after Northern Indivisible gave the heads up that the Marenisco Township Board was meeting and would be discussing House Resolution 151. That’s the bill introduced last August by Rep. Markkanen to make the abandoned Ojibway Correctional Facility in the township available to ICE for use as a detention facility.
Several people from Houghton County made the journey to the Marenisco Township Hall to speak out against the resolution, where they became part of a large group of concerned citizens at the meeting.
Among those speaking during the public comments was HCDP Policy and Resolutions Chair Katie LaCosse who discussed her white paper and the resolution adopted at our meeting last October. The white paper outlines a proposed re-use of the facility as a State Psychiatric Hospital. Many of the other speakers voiced support for that proposal.
All who took the floor during the public comments spoke against Markkanen’s proposal. All were pleased when Township Supervisor Mahler later said that, after speaking with Rep. Markkanen earlier, he could relay that Resolution 151 “is dead”.
TV6 sent reporter Colin Jackson to the meeting, and you can see his report here. (Katie LaCosse is heard speaking starting at 2:09). There were also excellent write-ups about the meeting and LaCosse’s proposal in the Mining Journal on February 21 (here), and the Daily Mining Gazette on February 22nd (here). (The DMG article is behind a paywall).

COMMUNITY NEWS
THE PEOPLE’S STATE OF THE UNION

The State of the Union address is tonight. If you’re not up for more of the Trump “weave”, there is an alternative. See below for more info and to RSVP for the livestream.
And don’t forget - Democratic Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger — elected last November in an off-cycle election dominated by Democratic wins — will give the response to Trump’s speech tonight.
From the organizers:
At the State of the Union (SOTU), Republicans in Congress are once again bending the knee to Trump and hanging their constituents out to dry. Nobody should participate in Trump’s vanity project, and that’s why Democratic leaders, MoveOn members, and everyday Americans most impacted by Trump’s chaos are coming together for the People’s State of the Union.
President Trump has spent the first year of his administration making lives worse for Americans: slashing health care, sending masked ICE agents to murder our neighbors, and passing tax cuts for the Epstein class. We cannot give Trump the attention he wants, or validate his lies to the American people. We cannot treat this SOTU like business as usual.
Join MeidasTouch and MoveOn as we present the People’s State of the Union alongside elected officials, partners, allies and directly impacted Americans.
NO THRONES, NO CROWNS, NO KINGS
NO KINGS IN THE COPPER COUNTRY 3.0

A few more details from Keweenaw Indivisible about the Houghton event. The quote below is from their Facebook post. The Facebook event link mentioned is here. We’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
It’s not Red vs Blue anymore. This isn’t even about just Trump anymore. It’s The People vs The System. The elites in power keep us poor, divided, and apathetic while they abuse not only us, but our children. We must stand up and say NO MORE. No Kings, no Oligarchs, no more abuse, control, and fear. We will win this fight because we will stand up together, united as one people.
If this message resonates with you, join us for the next National Protest on March 28. Check out the Facebook event link in the comments. We will be meeting in Houghton at noon. Can’t wait to see you there!
NEWS BRIEFS
IN MICHIGAN
STATE HOUSE SPEAKER CAN’T TELL US HOW HE’LL PAY FOR HIS PROMISED BILLIONS IN TAX CUTS: The Republican House Speaker Matt Hall pitched a $4 billion tax overhaul last week, including eliminating the State Education Tax, personal property taxes and a real estate transfer tax. When asked how he’d pay for it all, Hall had a very Trumpian response. “I have a plan.” the Speaker said, continuing, “I’m not going to get into it today”. Perhaps we’ll see his plan in two weeks? GOVERNOR’S STATE OF THE STATE TOMORROW: Governor Whitmer’s final State of the State speech is tomorrow evening at 7 PM. You can watch the speech online at Michigan.gov/StateOfTheState.

IEEPA TARIFFS ARE DEAD: In a striking blow to Trump the Supreme Court ruled last week that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, does not authorize the president to impose tariffs. Most of the tariffs Trump has imposed were done under the this Act. The President does have authority, though more limited in scope and duration, to impose tariffs under other laws, and he doubtless will try to reconstruct his “Liberation Day” tariffs but will face challenges. It’s unclear at this point how or when the illegally raised tariffs will be refunded. MORE: Associated Press
USA TAKES OLYMPIC GOLD IN MEN’S AND WOMEN’S HOCKEY: It was a moment of immense national pride when, on Sunday the USA took Gold in Men’s Hockey at the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1980, joining the winning USA women’s hockey team atop their respective Olympics hockey podiums. But on Monday that happy moment was overshadowed by the revelations that FBI Director Patel had flown to Italy on the taxpayer’s dime to celebrate with them. He was caught on video carrying on like a frat boy, right before the President called and disrespected the women’s team. Trump and Patel turned a moment of celebration into another international embarrassment for the Trump administration. MORE: MSNBC’s Ana Cabrera Reports
