VOTED McMORROW ON ABSENTEE BALLOT?

We’re highlighting the message shared on our Facebook page last week. The message is for anyone who cast an absentee ballot for Mallory McMorrow prior to her exiting the race, and who wants to understand their options to update their vote:

The Houghton County Democrats salute Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow for her candidacy in Michigan's U.S. Senate election this year, and respect her decision to withdraw from the race. Running for office is always an investment of time, effort, and ideals, and anyone willing to make a stand for their principles honors American democracy.

If you have returned an absentee ballot with a vote for Senator McMorrow and wish to update your vote, it may be possible to do so. You cannot change your vote if you have already inserted your ballot into a tabulator at an early voting site. But according to the Michigan Secretary of State website:

"Voters who complete and submit an absent voter ballot by mail, in person at a local clerk’s office, or via drop box, have the option to change their vote by spoiling their original ballot and requesting a new one:

  • The deadline for spoiling a returned absentee ballot is 5 p.m. on the second Friday before the election.

  • The deadline for spoiling an unreturned absentee ballot and receiving another by mail is the Friday immediately before the election at 5 p.m.

  • The deadline to spoil and receive another in-person absentee ballot is the day before the election at 4 p.m.

Voters who wish to vote in person after obtaining an absentee ballot can do so at their early voting site or Election Day polling place if they have not already returned their absentee ballot. Voters may either submit their voted absentee ballot for tabulation at the early voting site or Election Day polling place or they may “spoil” their absentee ballot and be issued a new ballot."

More information on changing an already cast absentee ballot can be found at https://www.michigan.gov/.../elect.../voting/absentee-voting

— Text from our Facebook post last week

If you have any additional questions on this you can call the Michigan Democratic Party’s Voter Assistance Hotline at 833-MI-VOTES (833-648-6837)
