RESOLUTIONS APPROVED AT THE SPRING CONVENTION & MONTHLY MEETING

A total of three resolutions were discussed during last Wednesday’s County Convention and the Monthly Meeting that followed. Two were adopted, and one was tabled to next month’s meeting.

__________________

ADOPTED RESOLUTIONS

One resolution, drafted by the Washtenaw County Dems and shared with us for our consideration during the Convention, supports the American People's Compact and urges the Michigan Democratic Party to not only do the same but also communicate their endorsement to Democratic leaders throughout Michigan. (See the wording of the resolution here.)

The second adopted resolution was part of the Monthly Meeting agenda. This resolution defends the constitutional rights of all who reside in Michigan in light of recent actions by ICE, and urges specific actions to strengthen those rights be taken by the State of Michigan. (See the wording of the resolution here.)

Both resolutions will be forwarded for consideration by the Michigan Dems at the State Convention next month. The Convention also approved forwarding our resolution from last September encouraging the state to explore conversion of the Ojibway Correctional Facility to mental health care.

TABLED RESOLUTION

A resolution forwarded by Dickinson County Dems was considered during the Convention but tabled as its intent was not clearly understood. The resolution as written appears to be meant for action by the County Board, not by the HCDP. Because of the uncertainty this resolution was tabled to the April meeting. (See the wording of the resolution here.)

County Clerk Jennifer Kelly has confirmed that she will bring Precinct Delegate Affidavit of Identity forms to the Spring Fling so that you can fill them out there. She’ll even notarize them for you personally at no charge. If you are unable to attend Spring Fling, you can bring the form to the Clerk’s Office in the Houghton County Building and ask for it to be notarized and submitted (also at no charge). You must complete the form by May 5. Thanks to Clerk Kelly for helping to make the first step in serving as Precinct Delegate much easier.

Locally, Keweenaw Indivisible and the Voters Not Politicians Education Fund are hosting a non-partisan Meet the Candidates Forum for the US House race here in Michigan’s First Congressional District. NO KINGS IN THE COPPER COUNTRY 3.0

From Keweenaw Indivisible, the organizers of the local event:

We have the power and are claiming it together. No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings.

What began in 2025 as a single day of defiance has become a sustained national resistance to tyranny, spreading from small towns to city centers and across every community determined to defend democracy. Our peaceful movement is bigger than ever.

When our families are under attack and costs are pushing people to the brink, silence is not an option. We will defend ourselves and our communities against this administration’s unjust and cruel acts of violence.

On March 28th, rise up, take to the streets, and say it loud: no thrones, no crowns, no kings. We’re not watching history happen—we’re making it. Join us.

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

  • TRUMP THREATENS CONGRESS ON SAVE ACT: On Sunday Trump threatened to withhold his approval for any legislation until Congress passes the Save America Act. That’s the voter suppression bill that is this year’s successor to the SAVE Act. The House has already passed the bill, but it is currently going nowhere in the Senate.
