THE SNOW IS MELTING AND SPRING FLING IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER - JUST 11 DAYS AWAY! GET YOUR TICKETS FOR OUR ANNUAL GATHERING & FNDRAISER!!

SATURDAY MAY 2ND, 2026 @ 5 PM

SOCIAL HOUR, DINNER, SPEAKERS, AWARDS & A SILENT AUCTION

The agenda for the annual Spring Fling follows the familiar schedule - social hour starts at 5 PM, with dinner served at 6 PM. After dinner we will hear from a number of speakers, both in person and virtually. Then, we’ll follow up with our annual Awards ceremony and the Silent Auction.

Our Keynote Speaker this year is Joe Gutowski, Chair of the MDP Rural Caucus. Joe is the driving force behind the legislative influence of the Rural Caucus, working to ensure that the voices of small communities are heard at the state level. His leadership and dedication have also been instrumental in organizing the Rural Summit, which will be held at the UAW Education Center June 16 through June 20.

EASY FILING FOR PRECINCT DELEGATE

County Clerk Jennifer Kelly has confirmed that she will bring Precinct Delegate Affidavit of Identity forms to the Spring Fling. You can fill a form out right there. She’ll even notarize it for you personally at no charge! If you are unable to attend Spring Fling, you can bring the form to the Clerk’s Office in the Houghton County Building and ask for it to be notarized and submitted (also at no charge). You must complete the form by May 5. Thanks to Clerk Kelly for helping to make the first step in serving as Precinct Delegate much easier.

You can learn more about what it means to be a Precinct Delegate on our website.

VOTER ADVOCATES OF BARAGA COUNTY MEETING

Readers of our newsletter in Baraga County likely got the email below from the Chair of the Baraga County Dems. But, on the off chance you didn’t see it, here it is:

Dear Everyone.
In the past year we have been attending local meetings and have found there is a core group, both Democrats and Republicans, who are like minded regarding local issues in both Baraga County and the UP. More recently we have been meeting to discuss local issues and work together to identify and find solutions for our community.

We will hold an informational meeting next Saturday April 25th at 1 PM at the American Legion. We hope you can attend. Appetizers will be provided and there will be a cash bar. This group will be bi-partisan but we hope we have a good showing from the Baraga County Democratic Party members. We think you will find this informative and hopefully you will want to join us to make Baraga County the best place to live in the UP!

CAMPAIGN NEWS

CANDIDATES ENDORSED AT THE MDP CONVENTION OVER THE WEEKEND

Listed at the end of this item are the candidates who received endorsements at the Michigan Democratic Party Endorsement Convention on Sunday in Detroit. Before the votes for endorsement were cast Brian Hoduski, our Co-Chair for Candidate Recruitment, texted from the convention floor. “I’ve never seen so many people in convention,” he said.

And then, a bit later, “We are the biggest convention in state history! They’ve got 8 overflow rooms.” A total of 7,252 Michigan Dems were credentialed as delegates to the convention. Amazing! And encouraging news for the midterms!

And, before that, on Saturday night, Governor Gretchen Whitmer spoke as the Legacy Dinner honoree, and was followed by keynote speaker Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. (see them talk here on C-SPAN).

And even before that, on Saturday afternoon, Senator Cory Booker gave a rousing speech at the Michigan Women’s Caucus luncheon, followed by quick comments by Governor Beshear and a sit down conversation with Former Vice President Kamala Harris. (You can see all three here on C-SPAN).
