Membership in the Houghton County Democratic Party is encouraged, but not required, to attend meetings. We welcome all Houghton County residents who support progressive Democratic government to attend our meetings and events and to become involved.

Please remember that you must have been an MDP member NO LATER than 30 days prior to the County Convention (or by February 2nd) to vote on matters at the County Convention. (Note that Precinct delegates, Democratic elected officials, and Democratic nominees to partisan office in the County are automatically eligible to vote.)

DID YOU MISS US LAST WEEK?

We had a jam-packed newsletter ready to go out to you on schedule last Tuesday, but due to human error (which unfortunately wasn’t caught in a timely manner) the newsletter did not get emailed to our subscriber list. We apologize for the error.

We had a nice write-up on the successful outcome of the Marenisco Township meeting where the potential conversion of the shuttered Ojibway Correctional Facility was on the agenda. And our recognition on the passing of Jessie Jackson. If you’d still like to see that newsletter it is available in our newsletter archive. Just click here to view it.

SPRING FLING TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

SATURDAY MAY 2ND, 2026 @ 5 PM

BONFIRE GRILL, HOUGHTON

HONORING MIKE LAHTI

At this year’s Spring Fling we will be honoring Mike Lahti, whose years of service to our community is an inspiration for a lot of us. One way you can honor Mike’s legacy is by giving back to your community through serving as a Precinct Delegate, and we have some great news for anyone considering becoming a Precinct Delegate.

EASY FILING FOR PRECINCT DELEGATE

County Clerk Jennifer Kelly has confirmed that she will bring Precinct Delegate Affidavit of Identity forms to the Spring Fling so that you can fill them out there. She’ll even notarize them for you personally at no charge. If you are unable to attend Spring Fling, you can bring the form to the Clerk’s Office in the Houghton County Building and ask for it to be notarized and submitted (also at no charge). You must complete the form by May 5. Thanks to Clerk Kelly for helping to make the first step in serving as Precinct Delegate much easier.

You can learn more about what it means to be a Precinct Delegate on our website.

BUY ADS OR DONATE AUCTION ITEMS

Would you like to place an ad or memorial in this year’s Spring Fling program? In addition to the printed program distributed to Spring Fling attendees, new for 2026 we will also be sharing a link to an online version of the program in our newsletter. That's a lot of eyes on your message! Quarter page ads start at just $25, half page is $50, or choose a full page ad for $100. Your ad helps cover the cost of providing the printed programs.

Or maybe you have an item or service you can donate for our Silent Auction fundraiser? We’d love to hear from you! Please reach out to Events Committee Chair Nancy Verive at [email protected] to get the conversation started. THANK YOU!

COMMUNITY NEWS

EVENTS AROUND THE COUNTY

Each week our newsletter features events of interest to Democrats and progressive voters in Houghton County. These events appear right at the top of our newsletter, and are also spotlighted in the Events Calendar on our website, houghtoncountydems.org.

We include events we sponsor, of course, but also events from other progressive and like-minded organizations too. There is a LOT of good work being done across Houghton County and we welcome the opportunity to highlight progressive activities to our members and to the almost 500 people who receive our email each week.

If your organization would like us to help spread the word for your event, drop us a line at [email protected].

NO THRONES, NO CROWNS, NO KINGS

NO KINGS IN THE COPPER COUNTRY 3.0

From Keweenaw Indivisible, the organizers of the local event:

We have the power and are claiming it together. No Thrones. No Crowns. No Kings.

What began in 2025 as a single day of defiance has become a sustained national resistance to tyranny, spreading from small towns to city centers and across every community determined to defend democracy. Our peaceful movement is bigger than ever.

When our families are under attack and costs are pushing people to the brink, silence is not an option. We will defend ourselves and our communities against this administration’s unjust and cruel acts of violence.

On March 28th, rise up, take to the streets, and say it loud: no thrones, no crowns, no kings. We’re not watching history happen—we’re making it. Join us.

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.

NEWS BRIEFS

IN MICHIGAN

  • GOVERNOR WHITMER’S FINAL STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS: The Governor called for her final “bipartisan, balanced budget”, and with a dig at House Republicans said “Let’s get it done on time”. And that was just the first minute! She ended her speech “Big Gretch out,” in under 50 minutes. You can hear the full speech and read the transcript at the link that follows. (Gov. Whitmer starts at just after the 8 minute mark in the video.) MORE: Michigan.gov/StateOfTheState

  • NEW ICE FACILITIES IN DOWNSTATE MICHIGAN: Local, state and federal officials from Michigan say they are exploring “all options” to try to block the opening of a new immigrant detention center in metro Detroit, but new federal records suggest the Trump administration is preparing to move forward anyway. MORE: Bridge Michigan

NATIONWIDE

  • STATE OF THE UNION DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE: Donald Trump weaved his way though the longest State of the Union address ever, and somehow never really addressed the issues that are top of mind for most Americans. Virgina Governor Abigail Spanberger gave the Democratic response. At under 15 minutes it is one of the most concise and to the point SOTU responses, targeting affordability and the President’s failures in his first year. If you haven’t yet seen it you will want to. MORE: Democratic Response on YouTube

  • UNAUTHORIZED WAR: The biggest move out of Washington last week was the start of Trump’s unauthorized war against Iran. Some have called it a “Wag the Dog” war intended to take the focus off the Epstein files. Everyone is asking what comes next. MORE: Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling (Ret.) on The Bulwark
